Kilnformed Glass

Ancient craftsmen used kilns to shape glass objects for centuries before the art of glass blowing was developed by the Romans. Once developed, glassblowing rapidly overshadowed the kilnforming technique. In recent decades, however, glass artists have returned to kilnforming as a versatile way to manipulate glass.

Glass fusing takes individual pieces of flat sheet glass, crushed glass, and other decorative elements, and heats them together in a kiln until they soften and eventually fuse together into a single piece.

Glass slumping takes a flat fused glass creation and re-heats it in the kiln, allowing it to either drape over or slump into a mold. It will then take on the shape and texture of the mold, forming a three-dimensional object.

These two techniques provide amazing versatility in the types of objects that can be created. The photo galleries on this site highlight some kilnformed pieces. In addition to photos of the finished objects, I've included photos of the work in progress so you can see how each piece is made.
